3. Jean-Louis Palladin Memorial Scholarship
Chef Jean-Louis Palladin is considered one of the culinary geniuses of the 20th century. He was a master of his craft, known for his creativity, passion, technique, and commitment to the very best. He was as much a teacher as a chef, encouraging and mentoring many while demanding perfection of himself and all around him. He was funny, laughed easily, and embraced life fully. He created a brotherhood among chefs. It can honestly be said that Jean-Louis Palladin raised the level of cuisine in America.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $5,000 will be granted.
4. Le Paradou

8. Simone Beck Memorial Scholarship
(sponsored by Paul Grimes)
Simone Beck was born in Normandy, France, in 1904. With Julia Child and Louisette Bertholle she introduced Americans to French food with Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Vols. 1 and 2. "Simca's" professional career as a cook and teacher began after World War II, when she joined Cercle des Gourmettes, of which Child and Bertholle were also members. Within a few years, the three friends formed L'École des Trois Gourmandes to give lessons to Americans in Paris. Beck's legacy continues to inspire culinarians.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $2,500 will be granted.

10. Taste America San Francisco Scholarship

Alberto Bello Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must:
- be entering the Institute of Culinary Education (formerly Peter Kump's New York Cooking School, where Mr. Bello was a student), and
- be making a career change.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $1,500 will be granted.
Allen Susser Scholarship (Chef Allen's, North Miami Beach, FL)
Applicants must:
- be planning to enroll or currently enrolled at the Florida Culinary Institute (West Palm Beach), Johnson & Wales University (North Miami, FL), Florida International University (Miami, FL) or The School of Culinary Arts at The Art Institute of Florida (Fort Lauderdale), and
- be a resident of Dade, Palm Beach or Broward County and substantiate residency.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $1,500 will be granted.
American Restaurant Scholarship (Kansas City, MO, chef Celina Tio)
Applicants must:
- be planning to enroll or currently enrolled at a licensed or accredited culinary school, and
- be a resident of Florida, Kansas, Missouri, or Pennsylvania and substantiate residency.
Up to four (4) scholarships of $4,000 each will be granted.
Ann Nurse Scholarship (New York City College of Technology, Brooklyn, NY)
Applicants must be planning to enroll or currently enrolled at New York City College of Technology's Hospitality Management Program.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $2,000 will be granted.
Bern Laxer Memorial Scholarship
(sponsored by Bern's Steak House, Tampa)
Restaurant pioneer Bern Laxer is remembered for his high standards of quality and service, and for his many innovations in fine dining. The memorial scholarships were founded to promote and support development of qualified personnel for the hospitality industry, and are awarded via the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay (Florida).
Applicants must:
- be a resident of the state of Florida and substantiate residency,
- have a high school diploma or the equivalent, and
- have had at least one year of culinary experience, either as a student or employee.
Scholarship recipients may reapply for continuing scholarships for a maximum of four years. Recipients who reapply for a scholarship will be given priority consideration over new applicants provided they maintain a grade average of B- or above.
Up to three (3) scholarships of $2,500 each will be granted in the following areas:
- Culinary studies
- Hospitality management
- Viticulture/Oenology
Broadmoor Culinary Arts Scholarship
Applicants must:
- be a high school senior in culinary arts at Broadmoor Technical Center (Overland Park, KS) planning to enroll at a licensed or accredited culinary school,
- have a minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale, and
- demonstrate financial need.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $5,000 will be granted.
Bryan Close Polo Grill Scholarship
(sponsored by Robert and Ouida Merrifield, Tulsa, OK)
Applicants must:
- be planning to enroll or currently enrolled at a licensed or accredited culinary school,
- be a resident of the state of Oklahoma and substantiate residency, and
- have a minimum of one year of culinary experience either as a student or an employee.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $1,000 will be granted.
Chris Desens Scholarship
(The Racquet Club, Ladue, MO)
Applicants must:
- be planning to enroll or currently enrolled at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, L'École Culinaire, East Central College or Belleview Area Community College, and
- be a resident of the city of St. Louis or St. Louis County for a minimum of one year and substantiate residency.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $2,000 will be granted.
Christian Wölffer Scholarship
Applicants must:
- be planning to enroll or currently enrolled at a licensed or accredited culinary school or wine studies program,
- be a resident of the state of New York and substantiate residency, and
- have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be considered.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $5,000 will be granted.
Clay Triplette Scholarship
(sponsored by Edna Morris)
James Beard loved to teach and encourage students pursuing culinary careers. Clay Triplette (affectionately called Babes by Mr. Beard) was by his side for 25 years and today remains the House Steward at the famed Beard House (home of the James Beard Foundation) in Greenwich Village, New York. Clay, in recounting the lively tales of Mr. Beard's life, revealed that one of his very favorite things was warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies. So to keep the tradition of good chocolate chip cookies and other wonderful baked goods alive, Clay asked that this scholarship, established in his name, go to a deserving student who wants to pursue a Baking and Pastry degree.
Applicants must:
- be planning to enroll or currently enrolled in an accredited Baking or Pastry Studies program at a licensed or accredited culinary school, and
- Submit a 250-word essay on James Beard what you find most inspiring, impressive, or notable about his life and work in American cuisine.
Up to four (4) scholarships of $4,000 each will be granted.
Dana Campbell Memorial Scholarship
Dana Adkins Campbell was born and grew up in southwest Louisiana, where life often centered around the rich culinary heritage of the Cajun and Creole cultures. With a native's appreciation for gumbo, jambalaya,
étouffée, rémoulade, and abundant Gulf seafood, she attended Louisiana State University where she studied Journalism and Home Economics. Pulling all of these interests together, she landed a job at Southern Living
magazine, where she rose to the position of Food Editor and then Food and Travel Writer. Her expertise in Southern cuisine was recognized by members of the James Beard Foundation, and she was asked to serve on the Restaurant Awards Committee, which she did for several years until her death from breast cancer in 2003. This scholarship is a memorial to Dana and a recognition of the role that food plays in enriching our lives. It is hoped that the recipients of this scholarship will carry on the task of enticing future generations to learn about their culinary heritage.
Applicants must:
- have a career interest in food journalism,
- be in their second or third year of study in an accredited bachelor degree program in journalism or a food-related curriculum at any U.S. college or university,
- be a resident of a "Southern" state within the Southern Living readership area (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana, Virginia, Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Delaware or Tennessee) and substantiate residency, and
- submit a 250-word essay about a memorable dining experience or favorite restaurant.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $3,000 will be granted.
Gene Hovis Memorial Scholarship
Eugene Leonard Hovis arrived in New York City from Salisbury, NC, with dreams of becoming an actor. Coming from a family of fabulous cooks, he entertained his friends in his tiny kitchenless apartment, producing wonderful meals out of a single electric frying pan. In time he studied with Dione Lucas and at the L'École Gastronomique in Lausanne, Switzerland becoming a caterer, professional chef, food stylist and consultant, most recently as vice president and creative director for the food services at Macy's. He was a kind and generous host, mixing the famous and fashionable with friends from all walks of life in his antique-filled apartment. The author of Gene Hovis' Uptown Down Home Cookbook
, Gene Hovis made a career of proving that traditional Southern food could rise to fine cuisine.

- be an African-American female, and
- submit a 500-word essay on culinary goals and how this scholarship will help to attain them.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $4,000 will be granted.
La Toque Scholarship in Wine Studies

Up to two (2) scholarships of $3,000 each will be granted.
MK Restaurant Scholarship

- be planning to enroll in the twelve-month Culinary Arts Program at Kendall College in Evanston, IL, and
- be a low-income minority student.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $2,500 will be granted.
Patrick Clark Memorial Scholarship
(sponsored by the James Beard Foundation Chairman's Circle)
Patrick Clark was the beloved and extremely gifted chef of Tavern On The Green, who died tragically young (at 42) of heart failure. Born in Brooklyn, Clark began his culinary education at the New York City College of Technology, apprenticed in the great kitchens of France, and established himself as a leading exponent of the new American cuisine. He was generous with his time and expertise, inspiring colleagues and students to new levels of creative excellence.
Applicants must:
- be a resident of Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens or Staten Island and substantiate residency.
Up to two (2) scholarships of $2,000 will be granted; both to residents of New York City, one to a student planning to enroll or currently enrolled in the two-year Hospitality Management Program at New York City College of Technology.
The Peter Cameron Scholarship
Applicants must:
- be a high-school senior planning to enroll at a licensed or accredited culinary school, and
- have a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 scale.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $5,000 will be granted.
Peter Kump Memorial Scholarship
Peter Kump was an educator and entrepreneur with a great love of food, whose interests ranged from theater, to speed reading, to the culinary arts. He founded Peter Kump's New York Cooking School in his New York apartment in 1975, inaugurated his professional program in 1983, and in 1986—at the urging of Julia Child—became the founding president of the James Beard Foundation. Kump himself had learned from the best, and this scholarship commemorates the inspiring culinary legacy that he created.
Applicants must:
- be a high school senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 scale,
- be planning to enroll at a licensed or accredited culinary school,
- have a minimum of one year of experience in the culinary field and substantiate, and
- demonstrate financial need.
Up to four (4) scholarships of $5,000 each will be granted.
Sanford D'Amato Scholarship
(Sanford Restaurant, Milwaukee, WI)
Applicants must:
- be planning to enroll or currently enrolled in the ACF (American Culinary Federation) apprenticeship program through Milwaukee Area Technical College and ACF Chefs of Milwaukee or WCTI Technical College, and
- be a resident of Milwaukee County, WI and substantiate residency.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $1,000 will be granted.
St. Regis Houston Scholarship
Applicants must:
- be planning to enroll or currently enrolled at a licensed or accredited culinary school, and
- be a resident of the greater Houston, TX area and substantiate residency.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $3,500 will be granted.
Wally Joe Scholarship
(KC's, Cleveland, MS)
Applicants must:
- be planning to enroll or currently enrolled at an accredited culinary school, and
- be a resident of Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas or Louisiana and substantiate residency.
Up to one (1) scholarship of $2,000 will be granted.
The Richard Koschwitz Travel, Work, and Study Grant for Culinary Professionals
(sponsored by Marko Gnann in honor of his friend Richard Koschwitz, a most generous and wise man who also appreciates fine food and wine.)
The grant is to be used for travel, living, and work/study expenses by working professionals, so that he/she can hone their skills of a cuisine in the very country of origin. By working and studying abroad, recipients will enhance their understanding of the diverse sources that contribute to the ever-evolving cuisine of the United States.
Applicants must:
- have a minimum of 2 years' experience working in a professional kitchen or pastry shop, and
- demonstrate financial need.
Applicants are required to submit:
- The Richard Koschwitz Travel, Work, and Study Grant for Culinary Professionals application,
- a letter of invitation from a potential employer or host in a country other than the USA, indicating the applicant's participation is welcome, and that all legalities regarding temporary work status will be addressed,
- two letters of recommendation from present or recent employers or supervisors, and
- an essay of approximately 350 words describing the applicant's background, explaining how he/she became interested in cooking, his/her hopes and expectations for this potential learning opportunity, and further explaining how goals for the use of this grant would enhance the applicant's skills, and what connection there is from prior work experience to the destination the grant money should be used for.
Recipients must:
- provide a minimum of one interim report and one follow-up report detailing the highlights of their experience, outlining what was learned, and offering suggestions for future recipients, and
- submit a complete expense report with receipts, documenting how the grant was spent.
Up to one (1) $5,000 grant will be offered for the year September 2008 to September 2009.

Windows of Hope Scholarships
The Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund was formed to provide aid, future scholarships and funds to the families of the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy who worked in the food, beverage and hospitality professions throughout the entire complex and who were lost on September 11th.
